PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph Giannone
Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned home
service company with an A+ rating by the BBB, is offering
Philadelphia homeowners tips on
avoiding unwanted surprises when they return from their holiday
travels.
"Nothing can ruin a trip like coming home to a problem,
especially one that involves property damage or requires an
expensive home repair," said Joseph
Giannone, owner of Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating &
Air Conditioning. "But the good news is most home-related issues
can be prevented before you leave."
Giannone recommends a mix of new and old school measures for
peace of mind while traveling. Smart home technology, including
smart thermostats and leak detectors that can shut off water in an
emergency, can often be controlled or monitored remotely with a
smart phone.
"Automated technology is simple and convenient," Giannone said.
"It gives homeowners the ability to control and monitor the
conditions in their homes from anywhere in the world. You can also
make sure that, after keeping the heat down while you're away, you
return to a warm home."
The Giannone team also recommends these basic steps for home
winterization:
- Check door and window seals for air leaks.
- Replace filters and clean duct openings.
- Avoid frozen pipes by keeping the heat at 65 degrees and making
sure pipes are well-insulated. During the coldest stretches, open
cabinets to keep pipes warm and let one faucet drip warm
water.
Those entertaining at home should:
Check the plumbing – With the influx of holiday guests,
toilets and fixtures get a lot of use. Make sure drains are clear
and ready to go. Try plunging some water into the drain. If flow
remains a problem, a plumber may be
required.
Prepare the garbage disposal – The kitchen garbage
disposal will get a holiday workout. Make sure everyone knows what
not to put in it. The worst items are bones, fruit pits, and
grease. When clearing a blockage or retrieving a wayward spoon,
never put a hand in the disposal. Turn off the disposal and use a
wooden utensil or tongs.
"Most holiday home emergencies are preventable," Giannone said.
"Proper maintenance and repairs of key elements in the home will
help you have a safe and happy holiday season."
