Apple Inc. said Friday it will reopen stores in four U.S. states where its locations will follow enhanced safety procedures, including temperature checks at the door and social distancing inside.

The tech giant plans to open stores in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho and South Carolina next week. The company's retail team is monitoring health data at a city and county level and will open additional stores in the future.

"As soon as we can safely open our stores, we will," a spokesman said in a statement.

In addition to temperature checks and social distancing, stores will require customers wear masks, which the company will provide if needed. Apple will resume the deep-cleaning practices it started in stores before closing them two months ago.

Social distancing will reduce the number of people inside stores, so Apple recommended that customers purchase products online and schedule an in-store pickup if possible.

Apple was one of the first major U.S. retailers to curtail operations when it said March 14 that it was closing all its stores outside Asia. The closures preceded a broad shutdown of the U.S. economy that occurred in March and April. States have begun loosening restrictions in recent weeks, paving the way to the store reopenings.
