Air Liquide SA (AI.FR) said Wednesday that it has signed a collaboration agreement with French utility Engie SA (ENGI.FR) to begin a project to produce hydrogen using renewable energy.
Under the terms of the deal, the two companies will work with the Durance, Luberon, Verdon area to develop a solar power and hydrogen-generation project in the area.
Air Liquide, a Paris-listed industrial-gases company, said it expects the first deliverables to be developed by the end of 2021, with the project completed in 2027.
Eventually, the project should generate around 1,300 gigawatt hours of solar electricity, as well as several tens of thousands of metric tons of hydrogen. The gas can then be used to power a range of vehicles including buses and trucks. It can also provide heating and cooling in the region, and be used in industrial processes.
Air Liquide said the Durance, Luberon, Verdon urban area is one of the sunniest in France, and has substantial land available for the project, including salt cavities ideal for hydrogen production.
