FRANKFURT--Ford Motor. Co. said it is going to invest 600
million euros ($642 million) in its Saarlois auto plant in Germany
for production of the next generation of its Ford Focus compact
car, a sign of the U.S. auto maker's commitment to its European
business.
The investment by Ford follows the decision by Detroit rival
General Motors Co. earlier this month to sell its Germany-based
Adam Opel unit to France's Peugeot.
Ford Werke GmbH, Ford Motor Co.'s German unit, said Thursday
that the investment is earmarked for high-tech production,
logistics, and more efficient energy use at the plant.
Ford employs more than 25,000 workers in Germany, more than in
any other European country. The company's plants in Cologne and
Saarlois are Europe's main production plants for the Ford Focus,
Fiesta, C-MAX/Grand and C-MAX models.
