Materials that may catch fire by spontaneous combustion are:

Rags and waste with oil and paint residues
Towels and linen, during laundering and drying
Paint overspray or material from a paint spray booth
Coal
Haystacks
Green waste piles and compost
A number of chemical substances, such as cellulose nitrate
Spontaneous combustion occurs when a combustible material is heated to its ignition temperature by a chemical reaction involving the oxygen in the air (oxidation). The oxidation of the combustible material creates heat. If this heat cannot be dissipated, it will build up in the combustible material until ignition occurs. Generally, the build up of heat to ignition point occurs when the material is bunched up or in a pile preventing the heat being generated from adequately escaping.

For ignition to occur, the rate of air movement must be sufficient to provide enough oxygen for the oxidation reaction but not so fast as to stop the material heating to its ignition temperature. Since the balance of oxygen flow and heat loss needs to be carefully balanced, spontaneous combustion is not common but is still a risk that needs to be managed Some businesses have had unsafe work practices for many years before they have a fire caused by spontaneous combustion.

The possibility of spontaneous combustion is greater if the surrounding air is warm and dry – as in the Adelaide summer. Preheating the material can initiate the oxidation reaction that leads to spontaneous ignition, or can hasten ignition by adding even more heat to the combustible material.

The spontaneous combustion of oil-soaked rags is not as common as it used to be because of the popularity of acrylic paints that do not require the use of ‘drying oils’ such as linseed oil. However, the problem still occurs with oil-based paints and some timber stains and polishes. Linseed oil is the most common example of a ‘drying oil’ but rapeseed, cottonseed, peanut, corn oil and safflower oil may also self-heat.

Fish oils are notorious for their self-heating properties. Mineral oils like white spirit, mineral turpentine or lubricating oil are not prone to self-heating and will not cause spontaneous combustion.

It is simple to prevent spontaneous combustion since oxygen is needed for it to occur. Materials subject to spontaneous combustion should be stored in sealed metal containers such as a safety can or rubbish bin. The container will contain oxygen at first, but the oxidation process will soon use this up and the process will stop.

Rags impregnated with linseed or other drying materials should either be immersed in water and spread out flat in a safe place to dry, immediately after use. If it is necessary to transport oil or paint-soaked rags, they should be sealed in metal containers.

Fires in commercial laundry facilities (and sometimes also in hospitals and laundromats) have been attributed to the spontaneous ignition of cotton or linen that has been dried and then either stacked while still hot or dumped into bins without cooling. If the materials are stacked or binned at high enough temperatures (above 90 degrees Celsius), the heat accumulated in the centre of the pile may be enough to trigger spontaneous ignition of the cotton materials. Materials must always be put through a cooling cycle in the dryer, or spread in single layers to cool completely before folding or stacking.

If towels and linen that contain oil (such as cooking oils or the oils from physiotherapy or massage clinics) are sent for laundering, a residue of oil may remain after the laundering process. The heating and drying after laundering may cause this residue to self-heat and spontaneously combustion. Reduce the risk by laundering with plenty of detergent and using a hot water temperature for the wash. Once again the linen must be put through a cooling cycle in the dryer or spread in single layers to cool completely before folding or stacking.

New Tech Firm Formed by Automakers to Help Manage Flow of Data, Energy Between EVs and Power Grid

NEW YORK, Sept. 18, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- BMW, Ford and Honda have begun operations of the new joint venture that they announced last year and have appointed the first CEO and CTO. ChargeScape is a software platform that integrates electric vehicles (EVs) into the power grid, shoring up grid stability while saving drivers money on their charging.
The announcement underscores that automakers remain committed to EVs – including plug-in hybrids – and are focused on reducing the total cost of ownership for their customers.

As more Americans switch to EVs, cheaper fueling costs have become top-of-mind for drivers, particularly while charging at home where 80% of EV charging occurs according to U.S. Department of Energy estimates. At the same time, the nation's power grids have come under increasing strain due to electricity demand from data centers and the intermittent nature of renewables.

To meet these needs, ChargeScape's technology wirelessly connects to electric vehicles and, working with participating utilities, manages the flow of electrons in line with real-time grid conditions, temporarily reducing demand when the grid is constrained through smart charging (V1G) and even sending energy back into the power grid when needed (V2G). EV drivers have the potential to be rewarded financially for their flexibility and always have their vehicle charged by the time they specify.

ChargeScape builds off of the early success of these automakers' work on smart charging through the Open Vehicle-Grid Integration Platform (OVGIP), which counts multi-state utilities such as Duke Energy, Xcel Energy and Eversource Energy as clients.

Board Names Two Key Leadership Appointments

Following the official launch of the joint venture, BMW, Ford and Honda announced the appointment of ChargeScape's first CEO, Joseph Vellone.

Bringing 15 years of experience in the energy and climate sectors, Vellone was most recently part of the founding team at software start-up ev.energy, where he launched and grew the company's North America business to include over a dozen utilities and 150,000 EVs.

"Joseph's leadership and track record operating cleantech start-ups is precisely what we need to make ChargeScape a success," said current ChargeScape Board Chairman Shaun Bugbee of BMW.

Before joining ev.energy, Vellone worked as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he was part of the firm's energy and environment practice. He is a graduate of Princeton University and the London School of Economics. While in high school, his student research on hydrogen fuel cells was recognized with honors from Congress and the White House.

"The U.S. has set ambitious targets for renewable energy deployment and EV adoption, and ChargeScape is here to bridge that gap between supply and demand of electricity," said Vellone. "We want to transform EVs from a liability into an asset for the power grid and help deliver a clean transportation future for our country."

Newly appointed ChargeScape Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Kalidindi Raju has over 15 years of experience leading high-performing technology organizations and is a recognized leader in cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, data engineering and product development. He previously held senior leadership positions at Amazon, OATI and other technology companies.

Raju holds a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M International and a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (India).

"Although the vehicle-grid integration market is expected to be highly competitive, our partnerships with the world's largest automakers gives us a significant edge. With direct access to the vehicles, we enable utilities to optimize EV charging securely and reliably," said Raju. "We plan to fully leverage this key advantage."

Ford's EV Retreat: Missteps and Setbacks in the Race for Electric Dominance
By: 24/7 Wall St. | August 26, 2024

Key Points:

• Ford halts its electric SUV project and reduces EV investments.
• Struggles with EV versions of the F-150 and Mustang.
• Indicates broader challenges in Ford’s EV strategy.

Though EV companies have some struggles and challenges, investors have already identified ‘The Next Nvidia’. See what all the excitement is about by clicking here now.

Wall st. Veterans Douglas McIntyre and Lee Jackson recently discussed Ford Motor Company’s (NYSE: F) recent announcement of a $1.9 billion write-down and its decision to scale back on its electric vehicle (EV) investments, specifically discontinuing work on a three-row EV SUV.

It comes after a string of disappointments for the company, and indicates Ford isn’t truly serious about being a competitor in the EV space. A summary of Lee and Doug’s points follows below:

Ford Shares Plunge to Near 2-Year Low
By: 24/7 Wall St. | August 13, 2024

• Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) stock is unlikely to recover the ground it has lost over the past two years.
• That is due in part to poor electric vehicle (EV) unit sales.

Shares of America’s number two car company, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), lost 2.4% to $9.86, barely better than its two-year low. The stock is down 38% over the past two years, while the S&P 500 is 25% higher. The share price of Ford’s cross-town rival, General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), has gained 9% in that time.

Ford had the opportunity to become the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) unit sales winner based on the potential success of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, which carried the names of the company’s most iconic brands. The F-150 full-size pickup has been the best-selling vehicle in America for over four decades. Ford began to produce the Mustang in 1964, 60 years ago. The brand equity built by each is extraordinary; the company needs to be concerned that the EV versions tarnish that.

What occurred is that Ford has never sold many EVs. Sales of the electric versions of the Mustang and F-150 are only a few thousand a month in the United States, compared to the total monthly new car sales of about 170,000. This is a disaster, and Ford may not recover from it at all.

In September 2021, CEO Jim Farley said Ford would have invested over $30 billion in EVs through the end of 2025. He also said in 2023 that it would produce 600,000 EVs annually in 2024. Recently, the company returned to higher production levels of profitable products like its gasoline-powered Super Duty pickup. Management realized that, while it lost over $1 billion a quarter on its EV business, it needed legacy gasoline-powered product sales to be strong for the company to be profitable.

No one will be able to say for sure what undermines Ford’s EV plans. Some say it made EVs that were not as good as those from Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA). Others say Ford changed the prices of its EVs too many times, and consumers have become confused and unwilling to pay a premium for EVs compared to gasoline-powered models. Yet others will say the EV market became crowded as the world’s major car companies battled for U.S. market share.

Ford’s stock is unlikely to recover most of the ground it has lost over the past two years.

Ford Motor (F) Stock on Track for Worst Day Since 2009
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | July 25, 2024

• The automaker reported a second-quarter profit miss

• Warranty costs are to blame for disappointing quarterly results

Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) stock missed second-quarter profit expectations due to warranty costs, but beat on revenue. The automaker also stuck to its 2024 profit forecast and touted Ford+ restructuring plans. F was last seen down 16.6% to trade at $11.39, with price-target cuts coming from Goldman Sachs and BofA Global Research to $12 and $20, respectively.

F is on track for its third-straight loss and biggest single-day percentage drop since May 2009. The security is pivoting lower from a July 18, 52-week high of $14.85, earlier hitting its lowest level since January. In the last 12 months, Ford Motor stock dropped more than 15%.

Drilling down to today's options activity, 93,000 calls and 181,000 puts have exchanged hands so far, which is seven times the volume typically seen at this point. The most active contract is the weekly 7/26 13-strike put, but new positions are being opened at the 11.50-strike put in that series.

Short-term options traders have been more bearish than usual. This is per the security's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.15 that sits in 91st percentile of annual readings.

Ford's (NYSE: F) Stock Is Too Expensive
By: 24/7 Wall St. | July 20, 2024

CNBC says Ford (NYSE: F) was among the S&P’s most “overbought” stocks this week. That means the shares have risen too fast to be justified by the company’s financial fundamentals and will likely sell off soon.

Ford’s shares have done well recently. They have been up 24% in the last six months, compared to a rise of only 14% in the broader market. And the news may not justify that. It has been mixed. Management said it would convert a Canadian plant from EV manufacturing to making its Super Duty trucks. The move is an admission that Ford has gone too far in its EV investment. However, its pickups are hugely profitable. This profitable move could have been enough to move the stock.

But why the “overbought” designation? Perhaps it’s because of upcoming earnings or Ford’s confusing long-term plans. The earnings will likely show steady revenue and EPS, but Ford continues to post huge losses in its EV unit.

Another nagging question is whether Ford’s EV investment was made too soon, pegged as high as $30 billion. Ford has a large capacity to build EVs, which were expensive to create, and there is little evidence that the money spent was spent wisely.

Ford’s early move into EVs involved using its famous Mustang sports car brand to launch an EV crossover and its famous pickup brand F-150 to launch an EV version called Lightning. “Overbought” signals that Ford’s management’s investment has exceeded its sales possibilities. The F-150 is one of the best-selling vehicles in history.

Is Ford Stock Underperforming the Nasdaq?
By: Barchart | June 21, 2024

Ford Motor Company F, headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, is a major player in the U.S. automotive industry. Valued at
GM, Ford continues to drive advancements in electric vehicles and autonomous driving technologies.

Companies worth $10 billion or more are generally considered "large-cap" stocks, and Ford exemplifies this category, signifying its substantial size, stability, and influence in the automotive industry. Ford remains a key player in the global automotive market by continually expanding its vehicle lineup and driving innovation in electric and autonomous driving technologies.

Shares of F have dropped 22.6% from their 52-week high of $15.42, reached on Jul. 12, 2023. Over the past three months, F's shares have declined 7.4%, underperforming the broader Nasdaq Composite ($NASX), which gained 8.3% during the same period.

Longer term, F is down 2.1% on a YTD basis and the shares have declined 16% over the past 52 weeks. In comparison, the Nasdaq is up 18.1% in 2024 and 29.7% over the past year.

To confirm the recent bearish price trend, F has been trading below its 50-day moving average since late April.

Ford's recent underperformance relative to the broader index is due to intense competition and disappointing financial results, exacerbated by car recalls impacting investor sentiment. However, on April 24, shares of Ford Motor rose by 3% following positive reactions to its Q1 earnings report. Despite challenges in the combustion engine and electric vehicle sectors, Ford Pro's strong performance and better-than-expected adjusted earnings per share boosted investor enthusiasm.

Highlighting the contrast in performance, rival GM has outperformed F and Nasdaq, gaining 33% on a YTD basis.

Analysts are optimistic about F's prospects despite its recent underperformance compared to NASX. The stock has a consensus rating of "Moderate Buy" from 19 analysts in coverage. The mean price target of $13.88 reflects a 16.2% premium over current levels.
