BERLIN-- Amazon Inc. said Thursday it will launch web-hosting
services in Germany amid mounting pressure from German regulators
and privacy advocates concerned with data managed by American
technology companies.
Senior Vice President of Amazon Web Services Andy Jassy said his
company is opening a new data center near Frankfurt to deal with
the growing German demand for its products.
The new facility is the second in Europe, joining a center in
Ireland, and Amazon said it is designed to be fully compliant with
German and European Union law, which restricts where citizens'
personal data can be physically stored.
Since revelations last year of spying by the U.S. in Germany,
German politicians and pundits have attacked American tech
companies as threats to Germans' personal freedom. One official
said Google Inc. is more dangerous than the U.S. National Security
Agency.
Mr. Jassy said the company's fortunes in Germany haven't been
damaged by the NSA spying scandal.
"Right now, we're growing faster than we imagined," he said.
