Dominion Energy Inc. said Tuesday that it will aim to reach net-zero carbon-dioxide and methane emissions by 2050 in its electricity-generation and gas-infrastructure operations, as part of its goal to combat climate change.

The company said it will decrease its methane emissions by 65% by 2030 and 80% by 2040 compared to 2010 levels.

To reach its goal, the U.S. utility said it will extend licenses for its zero-carbon nuclear generation fleet, promote energy-efficiency programs among its customers and invest in renewable power--including wind and solar energy.

In addition to reducing its own emissions, it said it will help accelerate greenhouse-gas reductions in other industries, including transportation, agriculture and manufacturing.

Dominion will improve its electric grid to speed up the deployment of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, and is also working on developing an electric school bus program in the U.S, it said.

In agriculture, the company said it is partnering with hog and dairy producers and has committed to $700 million in shared investments to capture methane emissions from farms and use renewable natural gas to serve homes, businesses and vehicle fleets.
