T-Mobile’s Network Protects Customers from Over 10 Billion Scam Calls, Expands STIR/SHAKEN Protection

- What’s the news: In almost 2
years of providing free scam protection, T-Mobile and Metro by
T-Mobile have alerted customers to over 10 billion Scam Likely
calls. Now, the Un-carrier is expanding its industry-first Caller
Verified feature, using STIR/SHAKEN standards, to seven more
smartphones.
- Why it matters: Tax Season is
especially rife with scammers looking to trick innocent consumers
with fake IRS calls.
- Who it’s for: Anyone who is
tired of the growing number of scam calls.
T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) has your back in the ever-increasing
battle against scam calls. Since launching free scam protection two
years ago, the Un-carrier has alerted customers to over 10 billion
Scam Likely calls. In addition, T-Mobile is expanding Caller
Verified, T-Mobile’s implementation of STIR/SHAKEN standards, to
seven more devices. It’s live today on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and
S9+ and coming soon to the new Samsung Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and
Galaxy S10+, as well as LG G8 ThinQ and LG Aristo 3. T-Mobile was
first in the wireless industry to implement STIR/SHAKEN when it
launched Caller Verified on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in
January.
Scammers aren’t slowing down. So far in 2019, the Un-carrier has
detected and notified customers of 225 million Scam Likely calls
per week! And it’s anticipated that by the end of the year, nearly
50% of US mobile calls will be scams. During Tax Season – now
through April 15 – scammers get even more aggressive, using
number-spoofing technology to mimic a known IRS number and leaving
“urgent” callback voicemails via robocalls. According to the IRS,
consumers have lost over $63 million from phone scams since 2013.
T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile help protect customers from this
type of number-spoofing with network-level technology that
identifies and stops spoofed IRS calls before they reach the
customer.
“Scam calls are an industry-wide problem, and it seems like
we’re the only ones taking this threat seriously,” said John
Legere, CEO of T-Mobile. “The other guys make customers do the work
to stay safe from scammers. If AT&T or Verizon customers want
scam protection, they’ve gotta download an app, which only protects
them as well as the last app update. We’re fighting scammers at the
network level, and we update our defenses every 6 minutes, so
T-Mobile customers are constantly protected – without having to do
a single thing.”
T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile were the first – and still the
only – wireless providers to deliver free scam protection built
right into the network…no app or opt-in required. As soon as a call
reaches the T-Mobile network, it’s analyzed, and scam calls are
then tagged to warn the customer that it’s ‘Scam Likely.’ The
T-Mobile network uses an in-line database updated every 6 minutes
as well as advanced spoofing detection technology not possible in
an app.
Caller Verified
T-Mobile was first to announce readiness for the FCC-recommended
STIR/SHAKEN standards in November and first to launch a new feature
of STIR/SHAKEN called Caller Verified on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9
in January. Today, T-Mobile announced that calls on the T-Mobile
network to an updated Samsung Galaxy S9 or S9+ are now Called
Verified, and customers will see “Caller Verified” when calls are
known to be authentic and not originated by scammers. The
Un-carrier also confirmed that Caller Verified is coming soon to
the new Samsung Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ and the new
LG G8 ThinQ and Aristo 3.
STIR/SHAKEN standards combat illegal caller ID spoofing, which
occurs when scammers temporarily hijack a phone number to match the
area code and 3-digit prefix making the incoming call look
familiar. Once other wireless providers implement STIR/SHAKEN,
Caller Verified will work on calls made across networks.
