Italian eyewear maker Safilo SpA (SLF.MI) Monday said its net loss widened in the third quarter, as sales fell amid a decline in the value of the U.S. dollar.

Safilo posted a loss of EUR4.7 million for the quarter, compared with a loss of EUR0.4 million in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue fell to EUR230.2 million from EUR237.9 million, the company said.

Third-quarter revenue was also affected by the sale of a retail chain in Mexico at the end of 2010, affecting year-on-year comparisons.

Sales in the U.S. fell to EUR110.6 million in the third quarter, from EUR116.9 million a year earlier, the company said. Revenue in Europe was affected by a slowdown in the marketplace, it added.
