BASTROP, Texas, March 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The City
of Bastrop's Art in Public Places (BAIPP) Task Force
today announced selected artists for the Bastrop Downtown Sculpture
Project launched last summer.
Twelve winning sculptures created by nine artists will
be formally presented in a special Sculpture Stroll event
March 22, 2015, and will be on
display for a full year in downtown Bastrop.
The 2015 outdoor visual arts exhibition is a significant
addition to Bastrop's Cultural
Arts District, art community and arts venues.
The artists selected for the exhibit are Benjamin
McVey of San Antonio, Cat Quintanilla of Sunset
Valley, Dan Pogue of Marble Falls, Jennifer
Chenoweth of Austin, Julia Ousley of
Arlington, Peter Mangan of
Blanco, Tom Tischler of Perth,
Australia, Warren Cullar of Austin, and alternate Maria Montoya Hohenstein
of Austin, whose work will be
added to the exhibit if any of the original winners are not able to
participate.
The Bastrop Downtown Sculpture Project will provide a public art
display of extraordinary variety, artistry, and creativity
according to Deborah Johnson, BAIPP Task Force chairperson,
local artist and owner of the Art Connections Gallery in
Bastrop.
"This highly visible and accessible exhibit provides an art
destination for Texans and our visitors from across
the United States and the world,"
said Johnson. "We're very excited about adding this exhibit to
our many art galleries, the Bastrop First Friday Art Walk, and
the upcoming Bastrop Art Guild's Lost Pines Art Center."
The event also will celebrate
the City's first purchase for its permanent public
art display — "The Conspirators," a three piece sculpture also
known individually as "Yosemite," "Yellowstone," and "Glacier" by
wildlife bronze sculptor Joshua Tobey, of Loveland, Colorado.
"Bastrop High School's mascot is the bear so Joshua Tobey's bears already have the respect
and affection of the community," said Johnson. "We want to thank
the Deep in the Heart Art Foundry for their assistance in the
purchase, delivery and installation of the Tobey sculpture. The
City of Bastrop is also
considering adding one or more of the selected works from the
Bastrop Downtown Sculpture Project to the city's permanent
collection. We invite everyone to come see this wonderful exhibit
and discover Bastrop's many art
galleries and wonderful local artists."
Winners of the top prizes will be announced at the March 22 event ($1,500 for Gold $1,000 for Silver, $500 for Bronze and $200 for Honorable Mention).
The Bastrop Art in Public Places Task Force works to expand the
enjoyment, access and appreciation of art.
