11:09 ET -- Twitter Inc. is one of the most talked about companies in the U.S. across all news items in the last 12 hours, according to Factiva data. Peiter Zatko, the company's former head of security, filed a whistleblower complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission which comes as Twitter prepares for its legal battle with Elon Musk, who alleges Twitter misrepresented its business. Zatko, who was fired earlier this year, said in his submission that he "uncovered extreme, egregious deficiencies by Twitter in every area of his mandate," including that executives deliberately undercounted the prevalence of span on the platform. A Twitter spokeswoman says Zatko was fired for "ineffective leadership and poor performance" and that the complaint is "riddled with inconsistencies and inaccuracies and lacks important context." Twitter shares, down 7.1% year-to-date, are up 0.8% late morning. Dow Jones & Co. owns Factiva. (robb.stewart@wsj.com)
