California's Ventura County Fire Department on Wednesday said an investigation has determined the cause of the December 2017 Thomas Fire to be power lines owned by electric utility Southern California Edison.

According to the fire department, a "high wind event" caused power lines to come into contact, creating an electrical arc and releasing "hot, burning or molten material onto the ground," which ignited.

The department said the fire, which burned for 40 days, was responsible for two fatalities and burned a total of 281,893 acres. The fire also destroyed 1,063 structures, the department said.

A spokesperson for Edison International (EIX), the parent company of Southern California Edison, did not immediately comment.
