U.K. antitrust watchdog the Competition and Markets Authority
said Tuesday that it has told Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) it will
investigate whether the $2.6 billion acquisition of Looker Data
Sciences will result in a lessening of competition.
The antitrust regulator has set a deadline of Feb. 13 for its
phase 1 decision after notifying the parties on Dec. 16 of the
launch of its merger inquiry.
The CMA earlier this month served an initial enforcement order
on Alphabet and Google over the acquisition of Looker Data
Sciences.
Google, a unit of Alphabet, agreed in June to pay $2.6 billion
for Looker, a maker of business-intelligence and data-analytics
software, to bolster its cloud business.
