WARRENDALE, Pa., April 24, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- During the SAE International WCX World Congress Experience, the co-editors of the SAE International Journal of Transportation Cybersecurity and Privacy made a $10,000 donation to the new A World In Motion™ (AWIM) program, "Cybersecurity: Keeping Our Networks Secure."

André Weimerskirch, Tom Forest and Kevin Harnett, co-editors of the journal, made the check presentation during the 12th Annual International JetToy Competition, in which more than 500 elementary students from 27 schools competed.

"There is a huge demand for automotive and IoT cybersecurity engineers today. That demand will only increase in the future, and we need to start training students at young age in cybersecurity to cover future needs for experts," Weimerskirch said.

The money will be used for the distribution of the AWIM "Keeping Our Networks Secure" program, making it possible for teachers to receive free training, materials and support from SAE International, ultimately reaching almost 350 students.

"The best content and curriculum in the world does no good unless it gets into the hands of teachers and students," Chris Ciuca, Director of Pre-Professional Programs for SAE International, said. "We thank the editors of the SAE International Journal of Transportation Cybersecurity and Privacy for this generous donation."

In this newly-launched program from SAE International, middle-school students deepen their understanding of the architecture of the internet and how it was designed to withstand both physical and electronic attacks. Throughout the challenge, students explore several physical models that simulate the movement of information through the internet; they identify problems with each model and test different enhancements to help make the network operate better and faster. They investigate the two basic components of securing data and systems: encryption (changing information from one form to another, especially to hide its meaning), and authentication (proof that something is real, true, or genuine). After learning about these important attributes of cybersecurity while exploring network security regarding self-driving cars from a fictional car company, Jupiter Motors, students work in teams to create marketing materials to help the target audience feel more comfortable and confident about Internet security.
