Germany is tightening restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus given a recent rise in cases.

Restrictions include a ban from retail and social-gathering venues for unvaccinated people.

During a joint conference with the heads of regional governments, incumbent chancellor Angela Merkel said the government would extend the so-called 2G rule--which grants access to venues only to the vaccinated or to people who have recently recovered from the virus--to retail.

The chancellor also said big events would have further restrictions, and that night clubs would be closed in case the incidence of new infections surpasses 350 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The government also reintroduced a mask mandate in schools.
