LONDON-- U.K. utility SSE PLC (SSE.LN) is considering ending commercial operations at its coal-fired power station in Fiddler's Ferry in Cheshire the north of England.

The company said Wednesday it will "consult with employees and other stakeholders in the coming weeks on the proposal to bring commercial operations to an end" at the station.

"Although a final decision has not yet been taken, SSE's expectation is that (subject to consultation) it is likely to close three of the four units from 1 April 2016," it added.

The station, which employs 213 people, is loss-making, said SSE's Managing Director for Generation Paul Smith.
