Novartis AG (NOVN.EB) said Thursday that it has appointed Susanne Schaffert as the new chief executive of its oncology unit.

Ms. Schaffert will join the executive committee on Jan. 1, replacing Liz Barrett at the helm of Novartis Oncology. Ms. Barrett is stepping down from her current role effective Dec. 1, Novartis said.

Ms. Schaffert, who joined Novartis more than 20 years ago, is currently president of Novartis subsidiary Advanced Accelerator Applications.
