Nike Inc. has suspended its contract with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson amid allegations of child abuse.

"Nike in no way condones child abuse or domestic violence of any kind and has shared our concerns with the NFL," the company said Wednesday. "We have suspended our contract with Adrian Peterson."

Mr. Peterson was indicted last week in Texas for allegedly injuring his four-year-old son by spanking him with a switch. Earlier Wednesday, the Vikings barred him from games and other team activities.

Nike's suspension of Mr. Peterson follows terminations of contracts with two other prominent athletes within the past month. The world's leading sportswear company ended its relationship with Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice over allegations of domestic violence. It also cut its ties with the amputee Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who was convicted last week of culpable homicide in the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
