Dominion Energy Inc. swung to a profit in the first quarter.

The utility with 7 million customers who tap its electricity or natural gas said on Tuesday it earned $1.01 billion in net income attributable to the company, compared with a loss of $270 million for the year-earlier period.

Profit amounted to $1.23 a share in the latest period, compared with a loss of 34 cents a share. The company's adjusted profit of $1.09 a share was ahead of the 87 cents a share that analysts predicted for that metric.

Operating revenue slipped to $3.87 billion from $3.94 billion year over year.
