Lyft Inc. shares were recently up 7% at $30.14 and Uber Technologies Inc. rose 6% to $31.07 after the companies received an emergency stay from an appeals court in a dispute with California.

Earlier Thursday, Lyft said it would suspend operations in California as of midnight Friday. Last week, a state judge gave Lyft and Uber until Friday to reclassify drivers as employees after California sued the companies.
