Airbnb Inc. said Friday that Amazon.com Inc. executive Jay Carney will join the company as global head of policy and communications.

The home-sharing company said Mr. Carney will start at Airbnb in September and will report to co-founder and Chief Executive Brian Chesky.

Mr. Carney, a senior vice president of global corporate affairs at Amazon, served with the company for seven years. He was White House press secretary to President Barack Obama from 2011 to 2014.

Mr. Chesky said Mr. Carney is the "perfect person to lead policy and communications at Airbnb", citing his work in government, technology and his time as a journalist.
