Regional lender Huntington Bancshares Inc. (HBAN) tapped
long-time U.S. Bancorp (USB) executive Howell "Mac" McCullough III
to be its next finance chief.
Huntington, a Columbus, Ohio-based bank with $59 billion in
assets, said Monday Mr. McCullough will serve as senior executive
vice president and chief financial officer, overseeing financial
planning, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, accounting
and other activities. He will begin early next month, a spokeswoman
for Huntington said.
Mr. McCullough has been with Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp,
which is significantly larger with $364 billion in assets, since
1993. He most recently was chief strategy officer, focusing on
efforts to generate revenue growth.
Mr. McCullough's last day at U.S. Bancorp is Friday, a spokesman
for U.S. Bancorp said. His duties will be split among existing
executives at the bank, he added.
Prior to joining U.S. Bancorp, he was director of corporate
development for Huntington from 1992 to 1993, and was a senior
financial analyst with the bank from 1991 to 1992.
His appointment as CFO brings a permanent face to a position
that had been filled on an interim basis by Huntington controller
Dave Anderson since last May. It is also the latest in a string of
shuffles among regional bank finance executives.
Mr. Anderson became interim CFO after Don Kimble left Huntington
last year to become CFO of Cleveland-based KeyCorp (KEY). Mr.
Anderson will continue serving as controller, the Huntington
spokeswoman said.
KeyCorp's previous CFO, Jeffrey Weeden, announced last May that
he was stepping down after serving about 11 years in the role.
Other major lenders, including Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB),
Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) and American Express Co. (AXP),
named new CFOs last year.
Huntington's shares were up 9 cents to $9.66 in recent trading.
The company's shares are down 0.8% this year through Friday's close
of $9.57.
