Mastercard Inc. said it received an investigative demand from the antitrust division of the Department of Justice last month seeking documents and information about the company's U.S. debit program and competition with other payment networks.

The credit card company disclosed the request in a securities filing along with its quarterly results Thursday.

The company said the DOJ request is regarding a potential violation of antitrust provisions in the Sherman Act. Mastercard said it is cooperating with the DOJ.

A representative for Mastercard didn't immediately return a request for comment.

Visa Inc. said earlier this year it received an investigational demand also regarding its U.S. debit program and competition with other payment networks.
