CVS Health Corp. said it is hiring for 15,000 positions in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, in preparation for an expected increase in Covid-19 and flu cases.

The pharmacy chain, which has been offering Covid-19 testing at its locations, on Monday said more than 10,000 of the new roles are for full- and part-time licensed pharmacy technicians. Temporary positions could end up being permanent, CVS said.

"We're estimating a much greater need for trained pharmacy technicians this year given the continued presence of Covid-19 in our communities," Chief Human Resources Officer Lisa Bisaccia said.

Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist at CVS, processing prescriptions, dispensing medications, providing information to customers or health professionals and performing administrative tasks.

CVS also said it is hiring several thousand customer service representatives who would work remotely, including in Indianapolis; Kansas City, Mo.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Mt. Prospect, Ill.; Orlando, Fla.; Pittsburgh; and San Antonio.

The 15,000 new positions are in addition to the company's plan in March to hire 50,000 people in response to the pandemic, CVS said.
