Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Surface tablet computer will initially
be sold without a connection to mobile-phone networks, Bloomberg
reported on its website Friday, citing two people familiar with the
matter.
The device, unveiled this week to compete with Apple Inc.'s
(AAPL) iPad, will be equipped with a Wi-Fi short-range connection,
the report said.
Bloomberg also reported that Taiwan-based Pegatron Corp.
(4938.TW) has contracted to manufacture the Surface, according to
sources. Pegatron also assembles Apple's iPhones.
Microsoft plans to begin selling the Surface later this year,
changing its practice of focusing on computer sofware while leaving
hardware to its partners.
