German fertilizer and salt supplier K+S AG (SDF.XE) hasn't yet reached the limits of its potential in the salt business, Chief Executive Norbert Steiner.

K+S will closely examine all opportunities arising on the market, in the salt sector and in other segments, Steiner said at the release of 2008 results Thursday in response to a question about potential acquisitions in the segment.

This also applies to companies such as Compass Minerals International Inc. (CMP), Steiner said.

U.K. newspaper Daily Telegraph reported last week, without naming sources, that K+S is preparing a $2.4 billion cash bid for Compass Minerals. K+S' board is due to meet Sunday to decide whether to press ahead with the bid, and to sign off on the financing package, according to the newspaper.
