NEW YORK, May 20, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- For a country that has straddled two cultures for centuries – Italy and France – Corsica to this day continues to paint a fascinating picture. Nigel Patten's latest historical novel "An Island Entire Unto Itself: A Portrait of Corsica at the End of the 18th Century" views the island through the eyes of Damian Berra, a young man from what is today the Swiss canton of Valais.

Marooned on Corsica after forcibly serving on a French ship's press gang, Damian finds the island infested with bandits and crime. Murders are seven times more numerous than in mainland France. The author bases much of his book on documented historical fact.

Although islanders yearned to return to their Italian roots, by the end of the 1700s, Corsica had been occupied by France for over 30 years. Thinking the French Revolution would finally be the key to repatriation, Corsican rebels offered the island to England's King George III on condition that the French are driven away.

Called "The Ungovernable Rock" by the British, Corsica proves a dangerous place for Damian, a man who only wants peace.
