September U.S. Payrolls Data Due Tuesday
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is planning to release a slew of
data delayed by the government shutdown, including numbers on
September payrolls on Tuesday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones
Newswires earlier this month had projected nonfarm payrolls grew by
181,000 in September, which would be an improvement from the
169,000 added in August. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, was
expected to hold steady at 7.3%.
Fed to Consider Liquidity Requirement at Meeting
The Federal Reserve Board will consider a proposal designed to
make banks more resilient during a liquidity crunch, a plan that is
part of a world-wide effort to push banks to hold more assets that
can easily be converted into cash in times of market stress. The
Fed is likely to vote on whether to move forward with the proposal
at next week's meeting.
Apple Likely to Unveil New iPads
Observers expect Apple will unveil its newest iPads at an event
the company is hosting next week in San Francisco. The event comes
soon after the September introduction of the latest round of
iPhones, which received a mixed verdict from investors.
Earnings Season Continues with Dow Components, Airlines
The third-quarter earnings season continues to roll next week
and, if results go well, could add to a rally that has sent the
Standard & Poor's 500 to a record high. Dow components
reporting next week include AT&T Inc. (T), 3M Co. (MMM),
Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and McDonald's Corp. (MCD).
Results are also expected from a trio of U.S. tobacco firms.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters project Altria Group Inc.
(MO), Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) and Lorillard Inc. (LO) are each
expected to report growth in both their top and bottom lines.
Airlines also come into focus next week, with reports due from
United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL),
US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) and Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV). Wall
Street is projecting better profits and revenue across the
board.
Agency to Resume Oil, Gas Data Publication
The Energy Information Administration will resume publication of
its widely watched data on U.S. oil and natural gas inventories
next week, making up for publications that didn't appear due to the
government shutdown. Crude oil and natural gas traders will get a
steady flow of back-dated and fresh reports over four days,
beginning Monday.
Kerry to Meet Group Backing Syrian Opposition
Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to London next week
for a meeting of supporters of the Syrian opposition. Mr. Kerry,
who has led efforts with Russia to find a political resolution to
the brutal war, has also said he believes there is no military
solution to the conflict.
Ecuador Tax Agency to Auction Banana Tycoon's Assets
Ecuador's Internal Revenue Service next week intends to auction
assets seized from Alvaro Noboa, a banana tycoon and former
presidential candidate. The seized assets are valued at about $136
million and include planes, yachts and several properties. But Mr.
Noboa's lawyers have said the seizure and auction are
illegitimate.
