Aflac Inc. (AFL) reported lower revenues and earnings, on a GAAP basis, for the third quarter.

The insurer reported earnings of $777 million, or $1.04 a share, for the period, down from $845 million, or $1.09 a share, the year earlier.

Aflac recorded losses related to certain derivatives and foreign currency activities, as well a loss related to sales and redemptions, weighing on results.

Excluding currency fluctuations and after other adjustments, Aflac reported a quarterly profit of $1.14 a share, seven cents more than what analyst polled by FactSet predicted.

Revenues at the Columbus, Ga.-based company slipped about 1% to $5.54 billion. That sum was in line with the consensus estimate.
