Prosoft Learning Corp. (NASDAQ: POSO), a technology learning solutions provider and owner of the CIW certification program, today announced that the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) have signed a statewide articulation agreement enabling public secondary students taking CIW Web design courses to earn college credit toward any of Virginia's 23 community colleges. This certification-driven articulation agreement is one of the first to be implemented throughout the state. To earn college credits, high school students must complete the courses with a "C" grade or better and also pass the corresponding CIW certification exams. Students can also earn high school and college credits through a dual enrollment option. The articulation agreement was finalized after the VDOE renewed the CIW Certified Testing Center (CTC) partnership for three additional years. The CTC partnership enables participating Virginia public secondary schools and community colleges to administer CIW exams in the classroom through Prosoft's CIW CTC program. Schools also can purchase discounted Official CIW Curriculum and assessment materials. The agreement was driven by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant titled "Creating Pathways for the New IT Professional." The goal of the grant is to develop, enhance and promote technology pathways from high school to community college and the workplace. The VCCS and the VDOE have also supported faculty development courses through the CIW Faculty Institute program. As a result, more than 160 high school and community college educators attended Faculty Institute courses in which they learned how to implement and teach the CIW program. The state continues to schedule future Faculty Institute courses to support additional teachers in implementing CIW statewide. Benjamin Fink, president and CEO of Prosoft, stated, "Our partnership with the state of Virginia is based on a clear objective: improving students' readiness for the workplace through a combination of technical and non-technical skills. Virginia is to be applauded for aggressively adopting a curriculum that was specifically designed to give students workplace skills above and beyond what is taught in most standard curricula. With the articulation agreement between secondary and post-secondary institutions now in place, students will have even more incentive to develop the skills they need for the hottest jobs." Elizabeth M. Russell, director of the Office of Career and Technical Education for the VDOE, said, "Everyone came together to make this happen, not just for the schools but most importantly for our students. It is essential to have Virginia's secondary and post-secondary schools teach the same Internet technology curriculum, both to ensure consistency in education and to provide a smooth pathway for students to advance their studies in Internet education." Elizabeth Creamer, director of Postsecondary Perkins/Tech Prep for the VCCS, called the new agreement "a significant milestone toward achieving the vision of creating career pathways that are open entry and open exit, that seamlessly connect students to higher levels of education and to the workforce, and that lead to productive partnerships between high schools, community colleges and universities. The articulation based on CIW certifications provided the VCCS and VDOE with a template for future statewide articulation in a variety of career and technical education areas." CIW helps individuals prepare for the highly competitive digital economy by teaching the essential Internet-technology and workplace skills required by today's employers. CIW is the world's largest industry-recognized job-readiness certification, validating skills in a variety of IT disciplines, including Web site and e-commerce development, network administration, security and Web languages.
