Work to start in Vermont and the Great Lakes to
secure fresh water for people and nature
Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (Keurig) (NASDAQ: GMCR), a personal
beverage system company that has revolutionized the way consumers
create and enjoy beverages, and The Nature Conservancy, the leading
conservation organization working around the world to conserve the
lands and waters on which all life depends, announced their
collaboration to address water quality issues for people and nature
across North America. The collaboration is part of Keurig’s water
stewardship goals and the Conservancy’s water conservation
objectives. In 2014, Keurig established a new 2020 sustainability
target to balance, ounce for ounce, the water used in all its
beverages through projects that restore an equal volume of water
for natural and community uses.
Beginning in Keurig’s home state of Vermont as well as the Great
Lakes, this collaboration will support work by the Conservancy on
projects that meet joint priorities, including scalability and
replicability, measurable long-term conservation impacts, and
opportunities to leverage significant alternate funding
streams.
In Vermont, Keurig’s support will help advance the Conservancy’s
ambitious conservation objectives that apply proven scientific
approaches to improving water quality. This will include the
Conservancy’s work in Vermont aimed at protecting and restoring
natural infrastructure that filter and retain water, resulting in
multiple benefits for Vermont communities – from enhanced flood
protection, to restored fish and bird habitats, as well as clean
water progress in Lake Champlain.
Keurig will also support Conservancy projects focused on water
quality improvements and conservation in the Great Lakes to advance
watershed management in the Great Lakes region and beyond. Through
these and future projects across North America, the organizations
strive for volumetric returns – specifically the volume of water
restored for natural and community use – to demonstrate impact.
“Keurig’s approach to water stewardship aims to be both
responsive and restorative, taking into account water impacts
across our entire value chain — from source to consumption. From
its water conservation objectives to its pragmatic and
science-based approach to conservation, The Nature Conservancy is
an ideal collaborator in this effort as we work toward our target
to balance the water volume of all of our beverages, ounce for
ounce, through projects that restore an equal volume of water for
natural and community uses by 2020,” said Monique Oxender, Keurig's
Chief Sustainability Officer.
“Keurig’s support for the Conservancy’s state and regional
level will help us build the momentum needed to protect our water
resources for the benefit of both people and nature. It is
essential that businesses provide leadership and support for
innovative, comprehensive, and replicable strategies that keep
water resources strong and productive across North America and
around the world,” said Michael Reuter, the Conservancy’s Director
of North America Water.
