General Mills Inc. said Wednesday that it has acquired meat snacks company EPIC Provisions, which it will operate under its Annie's foods business.

Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Austin-based EPIC, launched by competitive athletes in 2013, created a meat, fruit and nut bar that comes in flavors including Bison Bacon Cranberry, Chicken Sesame BBQ and Pulled Pork Pineapple. The brand also offers jerky bites and trail mix.

The snacks are sold nationally in Whole Foods, Sprouts and Natural Grocers stores as well as at sporting goods shops including Recreational Equipment Inc.

Founders Taylor Collins and Katie Forrest will stay with the business, which will remain in Texas following the acquisition.

The deal bolsters General Mills' bet that a bigger presence in the natural-and-organic foods aisles will energize a business sapped by flagging consumption of breakfast cereals and other traditional fare.

The food giant said Wednesday that Annie's has experienced strong sales growth since joining General Mills.
