FRANKFURT-- Volkswagen AG and its luxury car subsidiary Audi said Wednesday they are recalling a total of 850,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to problems with Takata Corp. air bags.

Volkswagen said it is recalling 680,000 vehicles from the model years 2006 to 2014. Audi later said it is withdrawing 170,000 vehicles, adding that the recall affects models built in the years 2005 to 2014.

Volkswagen declined to comment on the cost of the recall.

The withdrawal follows an announcement from Daimler AG Tuesday that it would take a EUR340 million ($384 million) charge on 2015 earnings for the recall of about 840,000 vehicles with potentially faulty air bags from Takata.

Daimler said it would recall about 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars and about 136,000 Daimler vans in the U.S. after auto regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notified it of rupture-prone air bags supplied by the Japanese manufacturer.

Honda Motor Co. also said last week it was recalling 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. due to Takata air bags.
