Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (“Kindred” or the “Company”) (NYSE:KND)
today announced that Kindred House Calls, the Company’s Home-Based
Primary Care (“HBPC”) business, has expanded into three additional
states.
As part of Kindred’s effort to facilitate physician coverage
across sites of care to develop population health management
capabilities, Kindred House Calls provides home-based primary care
(assisted living facilities, independent living and home) and
select specialty services for patients who cannot easily access
traditional outpatient care settings.
Kindred began developing its HBPC business in 2013 when it
acquired a primary care practice in Cleveland, Ohio. The founder of
that practice, Dr. William Mills, was newly appointed President of
Kindred House Calls.
Kindred recently acquired House Call Doctors of Austin, Texas,
which provides in-home medical care in Austin, Houston, San
Antonio, Dallas and surrounding areas. Julia Jung, the President
and Chief Executive Officer of House Call Doctors, has joined
Kindred’s Managed Care Group. Terms of the transaction were not
disclosed.
In March 2015, Kindred acquired Physician House Calls LLC, a
physician-led, primary care practice based in Denver, Colorado,
which delivers care in home-based settings. Dr. Thomas Lally, who
founded Physician House Calls, will continue to serve as the
Medical Director of the practice and will report to Dr. Mills. Dr.
Lally was named the American Academy of Home Care Medicine
Physician of the Year in 2014. Terms of the transaction were not
disclosed.
Kindred House Calls is also integrating two primary care
practices that were part of Gentiva Health Services, Inc.
(“Gentiva”), which Kindred acquired in February 2015. The Gentiva
practices are located in Austin, Texas, and Spokane, Washington.
The acquisitions and former Gentiva locations strategically align
with Kindred’s development of comprehensive Integrated Care
Markets.
In total, Kindred House Calls’ HBPC business has approximately
70 practitioners, including physicians and nurse practitioners,
serving approximately 10,000 patients. Kindred House Calls is one
of the largest HBPC businesses in the country, as ranked by the
number of practitioners.
“Expanding Kindred House Calls increases our ability to deliver
exceptional medical care in a patient’s home or community-based
assisted and independent living facilities,” said William M.
Altman, Kindred’s Executive Vice President for Strategy, Policy and
Integrated Care. “This strategic growth supports our goal to manage
and coordinate care across the continuum and builds upon our
ability to deliver integrated care and population health solutions
that support recovery and wellness.”
“Growing Kindred’s home-based primary care services enhances our
ability to provide high-quality house call services to patients who
are at high risk for hospitalization, and enables them to stay at
home,” said Dr. Mills. “Through our tailored medical care, we are
delivering improved clinical outcomes, preventing emergency room
visits and hospital stays, and creating positive patient
experiences.”
