Tesla Nears Deal to Use CATL's Cobalt-Free Batteries, Reuters Reports

--Tesla is nearing a deal to use batteries made by Contemporary
Amperex Technology Co. that don't contain cobalt in cars it makes
in its China plant, Reuters reports, citing unnamed sources.
--It would be the first time the U.S. car maker has used
batteries that don't contain cobalt, Reuters says, calling the
element one of the most expensive metals in electric-vehicle
batteries.
--The lithium iron phosphate batteries by CATL, as the Chinese
company is known, are cheaper than existing batteries by a
"double-digit percent," according to Reuters.
