Image Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: DISK), a leading independent licensee and distributor of entertainment programming in North America, announced today that it has acquired all North American rights to “Don McKay” starring Thomas Haden Church (“Sideways,” “Spider-Man 3,” “All About Steve”), Elisabeth Shue (“Deconstructing Harry,” “Hide and Seek,” “Leaving Las Vegas”) and Melissa Leo (“Frozen River,” “21 Grams,” “A Time of Destiny”). Image plans on releasing the film in April 2010.

“Don McKay” marks the impressive first-film debut of writer/director Jake Goldberger with Thomas Haden Church serving as executive producer. The film was co-produced by David Denney (“Rolling Kansas”) along with producer James M. Young (“Year of the Bull,” “Homecoming”). “Don McKay” had its world premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.

Don McKay, a high school janitor who leaves his hometown after a tragedy, returns 25 years later to rekindle a romance with his old flame who is dying of cancer, but this homecoming brings McKay more than he bargained for.

Image acquired the rights to the film from Los Angeles-based Animus Films and will oversee the distribution of the theatrical release in North America. Image Entertainment will also release the film for the home entertainment market including digital and broadcast. The deal was negotiated by Image Entertainment’s J. Beck, vice president acquisitions, feature films, with Kevin Iwashina of IP Advisors on behalf of the filmmakers.

“Like his performance in ‘Sideways,’ Thomas Haden Church has again created an intricately nuanced character that is truly compelling to watch,” said Garrett M. Lee, Image’s senior vice president, theatrical. “The story is breathtaking both in its originality and strangeness. It fits wonderfully into our growing portfolio of unique and entertaining films,” added Lee.
