CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.,

iBUYPOWER, one of the pioneers in North American esports and an
expert in building gaming PCs, recalls some of esports'
achievements from recent years through their new infographic,
Esports: Real Sports or Not? One name listed in their graphic is a
well-known legend from long ago.
On August 1, 2004, at the
California State Polytechnic University, the EVO Championship
Series was being held at the ballroom. It's the final round of the
'Street Fighter III' semifinals match.
Justin Wong, a Chinese-American
professional fighting game player is on the final round of the
'Street Fighter III' semifinals playing the character Chun-Li. He
faces off against Daigo Umehara, a
Japanese 2D arcade fighting video game player, who was playing as
Ken.
Wong was on the verge of winning over Umehara as the latter's
character was fighting on its last sliver of health - one hit would
be enough to finish him. Wong wanted to finish the match in style
thinking that unleashing one of Chun-Li's Super Arts move will let
him win cleanly.
Most people would think that Chun-Li's special attacks are
unblockable but that was what Umehara did. In a calm, Zen-like
focus, he blocked and parried each of the fifteen swift kicks with
inhuman precision, leaving Wong vulnerable for a nanosecond. Then
Daigo, in a pre-calculated move, countered with Ken's own Super
Arts moveset, depleting all of Chun-Li's health, defeated Wong.
The ballroom erupted with a roar. One of pro gaming's biggest
comeback happened.
This is just one account in the colorful history of esports.
Many more legendary esports moments have happened that can rival
traditional sports' own stories. In iBUYPOWER's recent infographic,
you can glance at the milestones of both esports' and traditional
sports' side by side.
The detailed infographic serves to let others, especially
critics, know the growth and impact of esports in the last few
years. The niche for hardcore gamers has truly expanded and
developed into a major global industry. Those who say that esports
is not a true sport will know that apart from passion and
excitement, it takes superhuman skills and godly reflexes to
achieve feats like Umhehara's.
iBUYPOWER aims to change critics' stance on esports' legitimacy.
Through the infographic, they hope to change esports' status
quo.
