United Airlines's parent UAL Corp. (UAUA) and Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) said they expect their merger to close Oct. 1 after they were notified that the Department of Justice has concluded its investigation of the deal.

The carriers previously said they were confident of closing the $3 billion stock-swap deal by year end.

Earlier Friday, the airlines said they would lease take-off and landing slots at Newark Liberty International Airport to Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) to ease concerns of regulators about the proposed merger.

Continental's shares were at $21.73, down 7 cents, in after-hours trading, while UAL's were at $20.46, up 1 cent.
