Volkswagen AG's global deliveries fell sharply in February, driven by a large decline in Chinese sales, the German car maker said Friday.

February group sales fell 25% to 546,300 vehicles, Volkswagen said. In China, vehicle sales slumped 74% to 60,900 vehicles, down from 234,400 a year earlier.

Sales in western Europe were comparatively stable, down 3.5% for the month of February to 263,800 vehicles, while sales in North America got an 8.4% lift to 70,700.

Deliveries between January and February fell 14% to 1.38 million vehicles.

The Volkswagen group includes a number of brands, including Audi, Skoda, Porsche and the company's namesake Volkswagen passenger-car brand.

Of those brands, sales in Volkswagen passenger cars fell 32% to 270,100 in February 2020, compared with the same period in 2019. This was the largest decline of Volkswagen's brands.
