Infineon, Philips and ST Welcome Freescale to E3 Lead-Free Initiative Top semiconductor companies unite to drive adoption of latest lead-free standard MUNICH, Germany, EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, GENEVA, and AUSTIN, Texas, June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Freescale Semiconductor, Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), has joined STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), Infineon Technologies (NYSE/FSE: IFX) and Philips (NYSE:PHGNYSE:AEX:NYSE:PHI) to further lead-free electronics packaging and promote a greener industry. Formerly E3, the group is now called E4 (environmental 4) and focuses on accelerating the use of lead-free packages while stimulating further development of environmentally friendly package technologies. In July 2001, Philips, STMicroelectronics and Infineon Technologies teamed up to develop standards for lead-free products. The definition includes factors such as solderability, reliability of alternative materials and characterization of the Moisture Sensitivity Level. Lead-free, as defined by the companies, is content less than 1000 parts per million lead by weight. Electronic equipment contains only small amounts of lead. However, the sheer quantity of devices worldwide means that any reduction in lead content is another healthy step toward a cleaner environment. By developing substitutes for lead-based materials in components and packages, the E4 is helping to make the world a greener place. In addition, the E4's efforts will help its customers meet the European Community's July 1, 2006 deadline requiring phase-out of lead usage in most electronic products. It's the aim of the E4 to provide a high quality drop-in solution for lead-free applications to all customers of the E4 members. Member companies will share databases and methodologies, collaborate on standards and develop a common conversion strategy for the transition to lead-free. This will promote a smooth introduction of new environmentally friendly semiconductor products. Standardization In July 2002 the IPC- Association Connecting Electronics Industries and the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association published the new standard, J-STD-020B. For small packages, part of the market demands a heat resistance up to 260 degrees Celsius peak temperature. Hence for small size semiconductor packages the standard J/STD-020B can be exceeded. The E4 will continue to incorporate the market demands for high quality insurance measures.
