The L-3 SPYDR II next-generation tactical
ISR aircraft features the L-3-developed Rapid Aircraft Payload
Deployment System (RAPDS), which enables customers to quickly
change the aircraft's mission configuration on short notice and
facilitates upgrading to new sensor technologies. SPYDR II can be
easily converted to maritime, ground/border or logistics/transport
configurations to suit a specific operating mission. (Photo:

The SPYDR II is mission-ready and fully certified with FAA
Supplemental Type Certifications (STCs) and features the
L-3-developed Rapid Aircraft Payload Deployment System (RAPDS),
which is specifically designed for the rapid reconfiguration of
sensor payloads.
The SPYDR II will be presented as a static aircraft display,
with briefings on its capabilities provided throughout the trade
days of the airshow from July 11–15, 2016.
“ISR is a core business and growth area for L-3 and we are
excited to introduce the SPYDR ll to our global customers,” said
Michael T. Strianese, L-3’s chairman and chief executive officer.
“SPYDR II offers a low-risk, cost-effective solution for global ISR
requirements and builds on L-3’s successful history of delivering
more than 70 King Air-based ISR aircraft to customers
worldwide.”
“SPYDR II represents L-3’s continued investment in our tactical
ISR business,” said Mark Von Schwarz, president of L-3 Aerospace
Systems, which includes the Mission Integration division. “The
SPYDR II distinguishes itself with our new RAPDS payload system,
which provides customers a customizable capability for multiple
missions and requirements.”
RAPDS allows customers to alter the aircraft’s mission
configuration on short notice, using plug-and-play technology that
integrates network-based sensors for any ISR requirement. This
unique approach enables customers to tailor payloads in support of
changing ISR specifications and also facilitates upgrading to new
sensor technologies. The SPYDR II RAPDS concept represents a
significant shift from the mission-specific configuration of
current designs and is adaptable to other airborne platforms as
well.
With SPYDR II, customers will have the capability to rapidly
adapt to meet mission requirements across the ISR spectrum of
technologies. The aircraft can be easily converted to maritime,
ground/border or logistics/transport configurations that fit the
customer’s operating mission. Sensor types include wide-area motion
imagery (WAMI), maritime radar, ground moving target indicator
(GMTI) and foliage-penetrating (FOPEN) synthetic aperture radar
(SAR), signals intelligence (SIGINT), and light detection and
ranging (LIDAR).
