STATE COMPTROLLER THOMAS P. DiNAPOLI STATEMENT ON
AT&T AGREEMENT TO DISCLOSE SURVEILLANCE REQUESTS
With the release of their transparency report, AT&T Inc. has
substantially met our shareholder request to disclose details of
government pursuit of its customers' personal information. As a
result, we will be withdrawing the New York State Common Retirement
Fund's shareholder proposal.
It is reassuring that AT&T has responded to shareholders'
justifiable concerns over the security of customer information. We
are also gratified that the company has committed to release new
information regarding these requests as changing government policy
permits.
The privacy debate is ongoing. AT&T should show leadership
on these issues by fully engaging in the debate.
