The geographical and historical uniqueness endows Guangdong with
a rich mixture of local customs, which are represented by three
prominent clans, namely Guangfu, Hakka and Chaoshan. The diverse
cultures here make Guangdong one of the best provinces in China for
tourists to experience rich and unique local customs and
festivals.
The Yingge dance of Puning, the human dragon dance of Leizhou,
the fire dragon dance of Meizhou, the puppet parade of Shawan and
the Long-Drum Dance of Shaoguan are all typical folk customs
usually staged on winter festivals, reflecting the unique culture
of Guangdong. During the Chinese New Year, major cities and most
counties in Guangdong Province will launch festive activities that
will last for at least half a month.
Events vary according to each city and region. Guangzhou will
have lantern shows at Yuexiu Park and Guangfu temple fair; Shenzhen
will have a temple fair at the Splendid China Folk Village; Foshan
will celebrate the Lantern Festival in the waterside Xingtan
County; Heyuan will launch its lantern festival, fishing festival
and folk customs parade, and Chaozhou will present an Intangible
Cultural Heritage Demonstration. In addition, lion dances, dragon
dances, puppet parades, traditional opera shows and martial arts
performances are all regular activities in most places of Guangdong
during the Chinese New Year.
