Statoil ASA (STL.OS) said Friday drilling has started on the Mariner field in the U.K. North Sea, with the first oil expected to be produced in 2018.

The international energy company, which is headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, is operator of the well through Statoil (U.K.) Ltd. which has 65.11% equity. The field is expected to have a life of over 30 years.

The Mariner field is located on the East Shetland Platform of the U.K. North Sea and has reserves estimated at more than 250 million barrels of oil, with an average plateau production of around 55,000 barrels a day.
