“ The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today announced a new grant to support testing and evaluation of Open RAN hardware and software – a key step toward the federal government’s goal of catalyzing the adoption of interoperable infrastructure in wireless networks here and abroad.
…
The best way to assess integration across the industry is to go big – which is why AT&T and Verizon came together to assemble a broad consortium that includes not only other major network operators like Jio and Docomo but also a wide range of vendors. Beyond traditional suppliers like Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung, this consortium will include alternative vendors like Fujitsu, Mavenir, Dell Technologies, Intel, Radisys, Rakuten, Red Hat, VMWare by Broadcom, and Wind River Systems – all potential additions to an open and interoperable radio access network.
This effort, which we are calling the Acceleration of Compatibility and Commercialization for Open RAN Deployments Consortium (ACCoRD), will be centered at an Open RAN Testing, Evaluation and R&D Center in the Dallas area, with a satellite location in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition to boosting the availability of testing, the group will identify new methods of assessing innovations and technologies not covered by current best practices. And we will evaluate a wide range of factors, including performance and security – all while taking advantage of the expertise of academic members of our consortium, including University of Texas at Dallas, Virginia Tech, Northeastern University, Iowa State University, Rutgers University, and Idaho National Labs.

WI-FI 7 SIGNALS THE INDUSTRY’S NEW PRIORITY: STABILITY
https://spectrum.ieee.org/wi-fi-7
https://www.reddit.com/r/EdgewaterWireless/s/j4l30XADD8
“ When Wi-Fi 7 arrives this year, it will bring with it a new focus on improving its image. Every Wi-Fi generation brings new features and areas of focus, usually related to throughput—getting more bits from point A to point B. The new features in Wi-Fi 7 will result in a generation of wireless technology that is more focused on reliability and reduced latency, while still finding new ways to continue increasing data rates.
“The question that we posed ourselves was, ‘What do we do now?’” says Carlos Cordeiro, an Intel fellow and the company’s chief technology officer of wireless connectivity. “What Wi-Fi really needed to do at that point was become more reliable…. I think it’s the time that we should be looking more at latency and becoming more deterministic.”
The renewed focus on reliability is motivated by emerging applications. Imagine a wireless factory robot in a situation where a worker suddenly steps in front of it and the robot needs to make an immediate decision. “It’s not so much about throughput, but you really want to make sure that your [data] packet gets across the first time that you send it,” says Cordeiro. Beyond industrial automation and robotics, augmented and virtual reality technologies as well as gaming stand to benefit from faster, more reliable wireless signals.
Multi-link operations will make Wi-Fi more reliable
The key to a future Wi-Fi you can depend on is something called multi-link operations (MLO). “It is the marquee feature of Wi-Fi 7,” says Kevin Robinson, president and CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance. MLO comes in two flavors. The first—and simpler—of the two is a version that allows Wi-Fi devices to spread a stream of data across multiple channels in a single frequency band. The technique makes the collective Wi-Fi signal more resilient to interference at a specific frequency.
Where MLO really makes Wi-Fi 7 stand apart from previous generations, however, is a version that allows devices to spread a data stream across multiple frequency bands. For context, Wi-Fi utilizes three bands—2.5 gigahertz, 5 GHz, and as of 2020, 6 GHz.
Whether MLO spreads signals across multiple channels in the same frequency band or channels across two or three bands, the goals are the same: dependability and reduced latency. Devices will be able to split up a stream of data and send portions across different channels at the same time—which cuts down on the overall transmission time—or beam copies of the data across diverse channels, in case one channel is noisy or otherwise impaired.
MLO is hardly the only feature new to Wi-Fi 7, even if industry experts agree it’s the most notable. Wi-Fi 7 will also see channel size increase from 160 megahertz to a new maximum of 320 MHz. Bigger channels means more throughput capacity, which means more data in the same amount of time. That said, 320-MHz channels won’t be universally available. Wi-Fi uses unlicensed spectrum—and in some regions, contiguous 320-MHz chunks of unlicensed spectrum don’t exist because of other spectrum allocations.
In cases where full channels aren’t possible, Wi-Fi 7 includes another feature, called puncturing. “In the past, let’s say you’re looking for 320 MHz somewhere, but right within, there’s a 20-MHz interferer. You would need to look at going to either side of that,” says Andy Davidson, senior director of technology planning at Qualcomm. Before Wi-Fi 7, you’d functionally be stuck with about a 160-MHz channel either above or below that interference. “With Wi-Fi 7, you can just notch out the interference…. You’ve still got an effective 300-MHz channel,” says Davidson.

One of the unique key features of 802.11be is the multi-link operation (MLO), which allows for simultaneous connections to different bands. On top of higher throughput due to link aggregation, MLO improves reliability, enhances band steering and load balancing, and reduces latency. Latency-sensitive applications and applications that require more deterministic connectivity are also supported thanks to the stream classification service (SCS) feature. The amendment also addresses spectrum efficiency and interference mitigation thanks to features such as multi-resource units (M-RUs) and preamble puncture.
Wi-Fi 7 is already gaining momentum, and many manufacturers — including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) — have announced the availability of chipsets and solutions. The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has just released a report that explores how Wi-Fi 7 will transform the way people worldwide live, work, learn and play. The report is available as a free download from the WBA.
Preparing for the Next Generation of Wi-Fi While WFA focuses on developing Wi-Fi 7 certification to ensure product interoperability, IEEE 802.11 is initiating the development of the next IEEE 802.11 amendment, known as 802.11bn (likely to be marketed as Wi-Fi 8). It typically takes several years to complete 802.11 amendments, and the finalization of 802.11bn isn’t expected before 2027 or 2028.
IEEE 802.11bn will focus on reliability, including increasing throughput at range, reducing tail latency and supporting seamless/near-seamless roaming/mobility. It will also provide schemes to reduce access point (AP) power consumption as regulators around the globe address customer premises equipment (CPE) power consumption.
How is CableLabs working to support these efforts? As part of our ongoing mission to represent the interests of our members, we take part in many WFA and IEEE 802.11 working groups to shape the future of Wi-Fi.

The addressable market for WLAN is being enlarged alongside the introduction of new technologies. "For example, Wi-Fi 7 will help deliver the deterministic low latency required for mission-critical industrial automation applications and emerging real-time technologies such as AR/VR. Again, WLAN’s convergence with 5G in private networks will allow the combined technologies to be deployed in environments in which wireless was previously unable to service, raising the addressable market for both technologies,” says Andrew Spivey, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. “To exploit these additional opportunities, vendors need to foster partnerships and build competencies for new applications and demonstrate to consumers that their WLAN solutions can satisfy the requirements of these new use cases.”
…
While larger vendors, with their market-dominant position and extensive pool of resources, may appear best placed to exploit the opportunities these new services offer, they also move slower and struggle to integrate new technologies seamlessly into legacy platforms. “On the other hand, smaller vendors are often nimbler and better equipped to incorporate new features consistently across their entire portfolio. They also have the advantage of greater focus and network management simplicity. For this reason, the emergence of new services provides smaller vendors a golden opportunity to eat into the market shares of their larger peers,” Spivey concludes.

With Dell’Oro Group estimating that Open RAN manufacturer revenues accounted for a mid-single digit share ($2 billion to $3 billion) of the total $40 billion annual RAN market in 2022, analyst Stefan Pongratz expects disaggregated radio systems to steadily grow through the end of the decade. Based on projections shared during the Open RAN Global Forum, available on demand, Pongratz sees the segment growing to around 10% of total by 2025 and around 15% by 2030.
To set the stage, Pongratz detailed the six core pillars of O-RAN: open interfaces, multi-vendor, intelligence, interoperability, vRAN/cloud RAN, and automation. “Most everybody is on the same wavelength, so to speak, in terms of the main pillars,” he said. For Dell’Oro’s part, a deployment needs to only tick the box associated with open interfaces to be counted.
…
Looking through the end of the decade, Pongratz expected more scaled adoption of Open RAN in the 2025 timeframe, especially as major European operators chip away at long-term deployment commitments. At the midpoint of the decade, he said, “In general, we believe we will be in a better position from a cost, timing, performance parity [perspective], and more importantly from buy-in by established players.”
The last point on buy-in, he said, could serve as a significant catalyst for the overall market. In fact, in September Ericsson announced it will “lead the industrialization of O-RAN by putting support for open fronthaul in its Cloud RAN portfolio beginning in 2024. That said, “There’s of course not going to be a magic silver bullet,” Pongratz said.
