I'm dumping this garbage as soon as it comes back up to what I paid for it...apparently these diptards need a competent investment counselor. This is literally the ONLY security in my portfolio that is down today, and it has been down since I bought in.

Shotgun, I believe that you are the one that needs to do some research. CYS pays almost 12%, NLY pays over 11% and TWO pays 10.21%. The price on CYS is more than $1 less than TWO and pays the same $.25 dividend.

wrong..look at TWO..do a little research before you mouth off....TWO is much better than CYS.

I have both followed and owned this company off and on for the past 3 years and although it is more volatile than I like it is very consistent with the dividends at abut 10-12% each qt. I am hoping to buy back in within the next few days or week sine they are about $1.50 above their 5 yr. low. The only other REIT's company that pays a similar div. is NLY but it costs about $3 more.

There are ETF's that pay more but they are also a bit riskier and consistency is the name of the game for me in the REITS's stocks.

Go CYS.

CYS would get a good interest rate spread as the fed taper further, leadings to more net income, and increased dividends.

Good time to buy in now. With a current dividend of 0.32/14.94%. You can always use the dividend to purchase other stocks while you wait for CYS to gain.

This is the way to grow your portfolio.

Reported mREIT book values mean nothing with these highly leveraged crap-shoot investments. Anyone who quotes a Discount to Book figure either has inside info (updated that hour!) or he's trying to spin the stock.

Do any mREITs continuously reveal their BV online? I'm not aware of any.

UGH! "As if that news wasn't bad enough, book value took a nasty hit, too. The drop from $12.87 at the end of March to $10.20 at the end of June was huge, even considering the $0.34 dividend paid on June 10. Earlier in the day, Deutsche Bank had downgraded a handful of mREITs, including Western Asset Mortgage (NYSE: WMC ) , based on book value declines of up to 16% during the second quarter. CYS, even factoring in its payout, suffered a drop of closer to 19%."

I have an alert set for 8.25. The manipulators are not done with REITS yet IMO.
πŸ‘οΈ0
johnsyn johnsyn 11 years ago
not that analysts mean the world, after all, they're manipulators, but a couple of the lesser knowns cut P/T to $10-11, so CYS is nice discount right now.
πŸ‘οΈ0
johnsyn johnsyn 11 years ago
it's not a huge mREIT, but they've been adjusting to rate increases. Yeah, the market manipulates the sector big time. Scare everyone, then when low enough, cry "too much", then if it rockets up, "whoa, not so fast". So funny.

Nice payday last night, fun averaging it down from it again. Getting well over 25% annual yield now, increases every divie payout. Looking forward to the day it works out to be 100% return, or when they become free shares, unbelievable returns, just dumping a paycheck in the account every quarter. So funny when someone has no clue how this figures in and tries to compare with S&P growth to show sector lags behind.

4:18 PM More on CYS Investments (CYS) Q2 earnings: The company puts together a neat table of how agency MBS prices reacted to Fed actions during Q2, noting sharp drops in prices (and rises in yields) on the days of minutes releases and the June FOMC statement/Bernanke press conference. The volatility created "a dislocation between the value of our assets and hedges" Indeed. A must-read for all mREIT (REM) investors. At today's $8.89 close, the stock traded at a 12.7% discount to book value

How can shorting destroy a NYSE company? Do you think heavy shorting of say Walmart stock would keep people from shopping there?
I've been investing for decades and I can't think of a single case where shorting played a role in the collapse of a good business.

I'm not trying to get you to avoid CYS. It might soar if interest rates fall. I just want you to understand how mREITs make profits to pay those fat dividends.

The dividends are big because the risks are big.
πŸ‘οΈ0
Trinityz1 Trinityz1 11 years ago
ok you've convinced me NOT to invest in CYS

I've seen this kind of shorting before on companies like CYS.
Some were wrecked.

In the meantime, it has convinced me to avoid CYS.

johnsyn johnsyn 11 years ago
along with the rest, though I think a lot is panic. People will see it's below it's NAV and jump back on, two ways to trade.
πŸ‘οΈ0
bar1080 bar1080 11 years ago
Stop the silly talk about shorting. mREITs are plummeting because interest rates are rising. There's nothing sinister going on. Actually the "plot" was in the holding DOWN of rates to ridiculously low levels for several years.

"my guess is that CYS has been shorted really really hard"

There are shorters in just about every stock, including this one. Big deal. No doubt all the the great growth stocks (WMT, MSFT) had tons of shorters.

These aren't appropriate retirement stocks, if that's what you're saying. They're highly leveraged BETS on interest rates. There's a ton of room for rates to rise.

Do you understand too that some mREITs have gone out of business? I believe that all of the earliest ones folded years ago.

can understand that. Looks like it is climbing a hair. Whether it will hold or not another story. I think the monthly mREIT keeping their next quarter the same is helping today, get rid of the pansy panic sellers.

9:19 AM What the Fed doesn't understand because it's made up of academics, says CYS Investments CEO Kevin Grant - presenting at KBW (presentation) - is the 30-year mortgage market is a forward market, i.e. there's no such thing as a slow adjustment, changes are priced in immediately. 30-year MBS are now priced for Operation Taper, he says, noting the large decline in 30-year vs. 15-year paper. CYS is loving it, picking up assets at spreads it couldn't have hoped to achieve previously

9:24 AM Mortgage REIT CYS gets an upgrade from Compass Point to Buy from Neutral with a reiterated price target of $13.50. Analyst Jason Stewart cites a favorable interest rate environment, a compelling share valuation, and changing investor expectations, but also notes Fed purchases will keep MBS spreads compressed thus putting a lid on ROE expansion.

SA statements that called themselves market currents, but had the additional stated "Can it be sustainable or cut more?" crapola from the anti-mREIT SA editors. Left it out.
I'm guessing the special dividend is to beat expected new taxes starting next year. It could be the actual divie payout will be decreased accordingly to that special divie amount, but we'll see. At least I'm mentally prepared in case I'm right. But better if I'm wrong.

Good news, the MBS holders haven't been selling at all 10:35 AM More from JPMorgan on MBS: The mREITs will continue to purchase agency MBS even with the Fed dominating the market, says Matthew Jozoff, noting the firms weren't sellers even during the financial crisis. With their stock prices already below book value (pg. 14), the main threat to mREITs would be a termination of repo funding or a massive MBS sell-off - neither very likely according to Jozoff's team.
