International stocks trading in New York closed higher on
Tuesday, with the Bank of New York index of American depositary
receipts adding 0.3% to 156.51. The European index rose 0.3% to
152.60, the Asian index was essentially flat at 154.16, the Latin
American index added 0.7% to 311.65 and the emerging markets index
rose 0.6% to 314.04. Among the companies with shares that actively
traded was WPP PLC (WPPGY, WPP.LN).
WPP said on Tuesday that it was optimistic for the rest of the
year, as the advertising giant posted a rise in net profit despite
lingering concerns about currency swings and increased geopolitical
tensions. Shares still slipped 0.6% to $102.61.
The chief executive of insulin-maker Novo Nordisk A/S (NVO,
NOVO-B.KO) said he hasn't plans to make any big acquisitions,
suggesting his company will be sitting out the frenzy of
deal-making that has convulsed the global pharmaceutical industry
this year. Shares of the Denmark-based company rose 0.8% to
$45.87.
Statoil ASA (STO, STL.OS) on Tuesday said its activity level is
at its highest, with more than 100 projects in planning or
execution; it said it aimed to maintain current oil and gas
production in coming years. Shares of the Norwegian company edged
up 0.2% to $28.44.
Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS, RBS.LN) is set to be
fined several million pounds by the United Kingdom's Financial
Conduct Authority over mortgage advice it gave customers, according
to The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the
matter. Shares slipped 0.2% to $12.06.
