SAO PAULO--Brazilian courts over the weekend issued an
injunction against planned layoffs at WebJet, the carrier recently
taken over by low-cost airline Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes
(GOLL4.BR).
The labor court in the state of Rio de Janeiro said late Friday
that it would fine Gol 20,000 Brazilian reais ($9,630) per employee
should it not reinstate by Dec. 18 the 850 pilots, air stewards and
maintenance staff it said it would lay off, according to the
website of Brazil's federal labor prosecutors.
The court agreed with federal prosecutors that Gol didn't meet
with labor unions to discuss the layoffs, as required by law, and
violated an agreement with Brazil's antitrust regulators that
approved the merger on the condition of preserving employment
levels, the prosecutors said.
The company may also be fined BRL5 million for damages,
prosecutors said.
Gol said Monday that it had yet to be notified of the
injunction.
