Highlights from our BTU Report include:
- The Clean Power Plan - On August
3, 2015, President Obama announced the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency's final Clean Power Plan which is aimed at
cutting U.S. carbon pollution from the power sector by 870 million
tons, or 32% below 2005 levels, in 2030. According to the
announcement, power plants are the largest drivers of climate
change in the United States, and
account for approximately one-third of all the carbon pollution
emissions without any national limits on carbon pollution. By 2030,
the plan is expected to cut carbon pollution from the power sector
by nearly a third and additional reductions are expected to come
from pollutants that can create dangerous soot and smog, which
would translate into significant health benefits for the American
people.
- Peabody's Statement on the Regulations -
On August 3, 2015, Peabody Energy
issued a statement urging further action by courts, Congress,
states, consumer groups and industrial/residential electricity
customers to turn back the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
Clean Power Plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions on electricity
generating plants. In the statement, Peabody argues that studies
show the rules would be punishing American families and businesses
with higher energy costs whilst damaging electricity reliability
without having any notable benefit even under the climate
theory.
- Alternative Policy Path - Peabody believes that
America's energy policy should be guided by the dire need for
affordable energy that is faced by more than 100 million Americans
who qualify for energy assistance. The Company put forth a
statistic which showed that even a $20 increase in monthly utility bill would cause
hardship to more than half of Americans. Peabody believes that
environmental goals can be achieved with an alternative policy path
that would be insistent on low-cost electricity, built on
investment in efficiency improvements at existing plants, warrant
deployment of high-efficiency low emissions supercritical coal
plants and greater research and development to commercialize
next-generation coal technologies including carbon capture, use and
storage.
