MELBOURNE, Australia--Oil-and-gas producer Drillsearch Energy Ltd. (DLS.AU) has confirmed Walter Simpson, who joined from a local unit of BG Group PLC (BG.LN) in March, as its new chief executive.

Mr. Simpson has been acting CEO of the company since early July, when Drillsearch parted with CEO Brad Lingo and unveiled plans to shift its strategy to break with a singular focus on operations in Australia's Cooper Basin.

Drillsearch Chairman Jim McKerlie said Mr. Simpson has more than 30 years experience in oil and gas, working in a number of roles worldwide at companies including Baker Hughes Inc. (BHI) and BP PLC (BP). Before joining Drillsearch as chief operating officer he was operations and technical director for BG's QGC natural gas business in Queensland state.
